
Hydrogen water is ordinary water with extra molecular hydrogen gas (H₂) dissolved into it. It looks, pours, and largely tastes like any other water, which is exactly why the category attracts both genuine research interest and more than its share of marketing noise. This is the honest version.
What dissolved hydrogen actually is
Water is H₂O, but that hydrogen is chemically bound to oxygen. Molecular hydrogen is different: free H₂ gas dissolved between water molecules, the same way carbon dioxide is dissolved in sparkling water. It is measured in parts per million, and practical concentrations sit between 0.5 and 1.6 ppm at room temperature.
H₂ is the smallest molecule in existence, which gives it two important properties. It diffuses through cell membranes with unusual ease, and it escapes from water quickly. An open glass of hydrogen water returns to ordinary water within hours.
What the research shows, and what it doesn't
Molecular hydrogen has been studied since a widely cited 2007 paper in Nature Medicine proposed that it acts as a selective antioxidant, reacting with the most damaging free radicals while leaving useful ones alone. Since then, hundreds of peer-reviewed papers have explored potential effects, most of them in cell cultures and animal models, with a growing but still modest set of small human trials.
Here is the honest state of the evidence: the biology is plausible, the safety profile is excellent, and the human evidence is early. Researchers have reported interesting results around exercise recovery and markers of oxidative stress, but the trials are small and the field has not produced the large, replicated human studies that would justify strong health claims.
Any brand telling you hydrogen water treats, cures, or prevents disease is getting far ahead of the science. We won't do that.

Why generation method matters
Because H₂ escapes so quickly, how hydrogen water is made matters more than how it is marketed. Pre-bottled hydrogen water loses concentration in transit and storage, and tablets and sticks produce inconsistent doses.
